I had read quite a few reviews about Noor Janan before eating there earlier this month. I would agree with many of the other reviews that it is a great local Indian but has a little twist in terms of a more interesting menu than the average.
The Alu Papri Chaat is an example of this. Not a starter found in many Indian restaurants. Crispy little puris with marinaded potatoes, chilli and tamarind chutney. Absolutely delicious although I recommend you share this starter as it is rather large! The Chicken Jalfrezi was very different, being cooked with green herbs and had a very nice level of spice, quite hot without blowing your head off. There are quite a few dishes on the menu I hadn’t seen before in other Indian restaurants and lots I would like to try.
The service was very friendly and prompt. There was a really good atmosphere with a mixture of regulars and some tourists. It is located in between South Kensington tube and Gloucester Road tube stations so very easy to get to.
The restaurant has been open for around forty years so they must be doing something right! For star spotters, supposedly Hugh Grant, Eric Clapton and Rowan Atkinson have been diners at this restaurant. Which just goes to prove, no matter how much money you have you can’t beat a good curry :-).
For me the greatest attraction is that this restaurant is likely to produce a consistently good Indian meal every time you visit it. Also it is very reasonably priced, especially when you consider it is in the Kensington area. Our bill for two with starters, mains, naan bread, rice and coffee came to £71.
